In Tesla’s Master Plan, Part 3, the thing we wanted to convey, more importantly than anything else, is that there is a clear path to a sustainable-energy Earth. It doesn’t require destroying natural habitats; it doesn’t require us to be austere and stop using electricity. We have published a detailed white paper with all of our assumptions and calculations of a clear path to a fully sustainable Earth, with abundance.
In fact, you could support a civilization much larger on Earth. Much more than the current eight billion humans could be supported sustainably on Earth.
I’m often shocked by how few people realize this. Most of the smart people I know actually don’t see this clear path. They think there is no path to a sustainable energy future with our current population. Or that we’d have to resort to extreme measures. None of this is true. In Master Plan, Part 3, we walk through the calculations for how to create a sustainable-energy civilization.789
A fully electrified and sustainable economy is within reach through the actions in this paper:
Repower the existing grid with renewables
Switch to electric vehicles
Switch to heat pumps in residential, business, and industry
Electrify high-temperature heat delivery and hydrogen production
Sustainably fuel planes and boats
Manufacture the sustainable energy economy
Our models show the electrified and sustainable future is technically feasible and requires less investment and less material extraction than continuing today’s unsustainable energy economy.790
The tools we make at Tesla help us build the products that advance human prosperity. Making technologically advanced products that are affordable and available at scale is required to build a flourishing and unconstrained society. It serves to further democratize society while raising everyone’s quality of life in the process.
The hallmark of meritocracy is creating opportunities that enable each person to use their skills to accomplish whatever they imagine. Everyone deserves access to these opportunities, and technological growth can help ensure that each of us is able to maximize our most limited resource: time.
